Ogun State is grappling with a concerning surge in human trafficking , as revealed by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons ( NAPTIP ). The State Commander, Abosede Jimoh, expressed deep concern over the escalating trend, reporting that the agency has handled no less than 100 victims and apprehended 70 suspects since late 2023.
This alarming data highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat human trafficking within the state. Jimoh’s remarks were made during a sensitization program organized by the State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in partnership with the Police Officer Wives Association, held at Lafenwa market, Abeokuta. The primary objective of the program was to raise awareness about human trafficking and irregular migration, targeting the community and market women. The NAPTIP Commander detailed the deceptive tactics used by traffickers, who lure victims with promises of employment, only to subject them to sexual exploitation. The rescued underage victims have reportedly confessed to harrowing experiences, including being forced to engage in sexual acts with a large number of individuals daily. This grim reality underscores the devastating impact of human trafficking on vulnerable individuals, particularly young girls who are robbed of their childhood and future prospects. Jimoh further elaborated on the evolving nature of human trafficking in Ogun State, noting that the victims now include not only underage children but also women who are being trafficked to Cairo. She emphasized the multifaceted support provided to victims by NAPTIP, including counseling, medical checkups, empowerment initiatives, and reintegration into society. This holistic approach aims to address the physical, psychological, and social needs of survivors, empowering them to rebuild their lives and break free from the cycle of exploitation. The trafficking process involves moving victims from various locations, from rural areas to urban centers, and even outside the country, with sexual exploitation as the primary objective. Jimoh specifically stated, that victims are trafficked for sexual exploitation and forced to engage in heinous acts, including sexual relations with animals. She highlighted the presence of NAPTIP in Ogun State for two and a half years, during which time they have handled numerous cases, as proof of the problem’s severity. NAPTIP has nine ongoing cases in court, with three convictions already secured and others still under investigation. These figures reflect the tireless efforts of NAPTIP to combat trafficking and bring perpetrators to justice. The impact is felt through the loss of innocence and the disruption of these girls’ education, highlighting how it robs them of their futures.Supporting the call for vigilance and community action, the Chairperson of the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), Ogun State Chapter, Mrs. Olubusola Lanre-Ogunlowo, reaffirmed the association’s dedication to empowering women and youth through skill-building and training programs. Ogunlowo urged market women and community members to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities or unusual movements to the appropriate authorities.
