TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Hualien County Government said Wednesday it has strengthened avian influenza prevention measures as seasonal migratory birds increase the risk of outbreaks.
CNA reported that the current period remains high risk for avian flu due to frequent bird migration and recent domestic cases. The county government urged poultry farmers to tighten farm-level disease control and strengthen biosecurity.
Agricultural Department Director Chen Shu-wen (陳淑雯) said the county continues farm inspections and sampling in line with central government policies. She said early prevention, prompt reporting, and swift response can effectively reduce outbreak risks, CTS reported.
The department advised farmers to improve bird-proof nets and fencing to prevent wild birds from entering farms. Farmers should also monitor poultry health daily and immediately report signs such as loss of appetite, breathing problems, a sudden drop in egg production, or unexplained deaths, per UDN.
“Avian influenza mainly spreads through infected poultry or wild birds, as well as contaminated equipment, vehicles, and human movement,” said Chou Huang Teh-jung (周黃得榮), director of the county’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine Center. He said farms must strictly enforce vehicle and personnel controls, disinfection procedures, and environmental cleaning.
The center also reminded consumers to buy poultry and eggs from legal sources and to fully cook products before eating. It said there is no need for undue concern if proper food safety practices are followed.
Officials said avian flu prevention requires joint efforts by the government and industry to protect the stability of Hualien’s livestock sector. They thanked frontline workers and farmers for their continued cooperation in disease control efforts.
