LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Every year, the Point-In-Time Count, also known as the PIT Count, aims to find and serve unhoused people across southwest Oklahoma.
This census is done every year; this year, volunteers will be reaching out in nearly every county in the region, including Stephens, Harmon, Cotton, and Comanche Counties.
The goal is to get data for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which will determine funding for the year, and according to the housing coordinator for MIGHT Development, Cecilia Solano, that funding will be distributed back into the unhoused community.
“Getting funding to get them housed,” she said, “Getting funding to help them find, maybe a place to live.”
She added, “Or, sometimes, we get the health department involved and they do the interviews so they can help them with their health, you know, food stamps, anything else that they need; also SSI, SSDI.”
If you’re looking to help out, PIT Count volunteers are most needed in Cotton, Kiowa, Harmon, Greer and Washita Counties.
If you can’t volunteer your time, but would still like to help out, call (580) 595-1677 to donate essentials that will be distributed to those in need.
Volunteers will be packing bags full of essentials for unhoused people at the MIGHT Center at 10 a.m. this upcoming Tuesday.
