How many people have gone to every country? – Curious Expeditions

The Elusive Quest: How Many People Have Traveled to Every Country?

The answer, surprisingly, is remarkably few. Estimates suggest that only a handful of individuals, potentially fewer than 200 people worldwide, have verifiably visited every sovereign nation recognized by the United Nations.

Identifying the exact number is an exercise in futility. No central registry exists, and many travelers prefer to keep their accomplishments private. However, through meticulous record-keeping by travel communities, dedicated websites, and the tireless efforts of seasoned travelers themselves, a rough estimate can be gleaned. This select group, often referred to as “every country travelers” or “most traveled people,” represents the pinnacle of wanderlust, dedication, and often, considerable financial resources. Their journeys are testament to human curiosity and an unwavering desire to experience the world in its entirety. The process of verifying claims of having visited every country often involves meticulous documentation, personal interviews, and cross-referencing with credible sources.

The very definition of “every country” presents a significant hurdle. Different organizations, such as the United Nations, Travelers’ Century Club, and Most Traveled People (MTP), recognize varying numbers of sovereign nations and territories. The United Nations currently recognizes 193 member states and two observer states (Palestine and the Holy See). But some travelers might include disputed territories, dependencies, or even entities like the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in their count, complicating the picture.

Border disputes, political instability, and changing national identities further add to the challenge. For example, the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia created several new nations. Travelers who visited the region before its breakup might need to revisit certain areas to officially “check off” the newly formed countries. Similar situations exist in other parts of the world, necessitating constant vigilance and adaptation on the part of those pursuing this ambitious goal.

Should territories like Greenland, Puerto Rico, or Hong Kong be included? The answer depends on the individual traveler’s personal definition and the guidelines they choose to follow. Some strive to visit every sovereign nation recognized by the UN, while others adopt a broader definition encompassing a greater number of geopolitical entities.

The biggest challenges are multifaceted: securing visas, affording the trips (especially to remote or expensive nations), navigating political instability, dealing with health concerns in less developed countries, and, perhaps surprisingly, maintaining the motivation and stamina required for such a lengthy and demanding undertaking. Visa requirements can be particularly arduous, often necessitating extensive paperwork and travel to specific embassies. Financial constraints can be overcome with careful planning and budgeting, but they remain a significant obstacle for many.

There is no average cost, as it depends heavily on travel style. A budget traveler might spend $100,000 – $200,000 over many years, while a luxury traveler could easily spend millions. Factors influencing cost include accommodation choices, transportation methods, length of stay in each country, and dining preferences. Thorough research and meticulous budgeting are crucial for managing expenses effectively.

Countries like North Korea, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Eritrea are notoriously difficult due to political instability, visa restrictions, security concerns, or lack of infrastructure. Gaining access to these countries often requires special permits, government escorts, and a willingness to accept a higher level of risk. Travelers venturing to these regions must exercise extreme caution and adhere to all local laws and regulations.

Again, it varies greatly. Some incredibly driven individuals have completed the journey in as little as a few years, while others take decades. The speed depends on available time, financial resources, and travel style. Many “every country travelers” embark on this pursuit over the course of their entire adult lives, integrating travel into their careers and personal lives.

While there isn’t a single “official” organization, several travel clubs cater to avid travelers, including the Travelers’ Century Club (TCC), which recognizes individuals who have visited 100 or more countries, and Most Traveled People (MTP), which offers a points-based system for tracking travel to various regions and territories. These clubs provide a platform for networking, sharing experiences, and verifying travel claims.

A mix of air travel, overland journeys (buses, trains, cars), and sea travel (ships, ferries) is typical. Air travel is often the most efficient way to cover long distances, while overland travel offers a more immersive experience. Sea travel can provide access to remote island nations or coastal regions. The choice of transportation often depends on the destination, budget, and personal preferences.

While there’s no universally accepted standard, common documentation includes passport stamps, visas, photos with recognizable landmarks, boarding passes, receipts, and journal entries. Sharing stories and photos on travel blogs or social media can also serve as evidence. The verification process often involves cross-referencing documentation with credible sources and personal interviews with seasoned travelers.

Yes, ethical considerations are paramount. Responsible travelers strive to minimize their environmental impact, respect local cultures, and contribute to local economies. Avoiding overcrowded tourist destinations, supporting sustainable tourism initiatives, and learning about local customs are essential for ethical travel.

Motivations vary widely, but common reasons include a deep-seated curiosity about the world, a desire to challenge themselves, a passion for experiencing different cultures, and a longing to break free from routine. For many, it’s about personal growth, expanding their horizons, and gaining a deeper understanding of humanity.

The impact is transformative. Many “every country travelers” report feeling more open-minded, empathetic, and culturally aware. They often develop a greater appreciation for the diversity of human experience and a stronger sense of global citizenship.

Numerous resources exist, including travel blogs, online forums, travel guidebooks, and visa information websites. Websites like NomadMania and the Travelers’ Century Club offer valuable insights and resources for planning complex travel itineraries.

Potentially, yes. As geopolitical landscapes shift and new nations emerge, the opportunity to be among the first to visit them arises. Staying informed about geopolitical developments and maintaining a flexible travel plan can increase the chances of visiting newly formed countries. While exceedingly rare, the possibility remains.

The quest to visit every country remains an aspirational goal for many, a testament to the human spirit’s unyielding curiosity and boundless desire for exploration. While the exact number of individuals who have achieved this feat remains shrouded in some mystery, the dedication and passion of these global citizens inspire us to embrace the world with open arms and embark on our own journeys of discovery.
