How Chainlink Is Powering ISO 20022 Messaging for the World’s Largest Financial Institutions – Crypto News Flash

The network now supports integration with traditional financial systems by producing ISO 20022-compliant messages.

ISO 20022 is an international standard for electronic data interchange between financial institutions. It defines a common platform for the development of messages used in payments, securities, trade services, and foreign exchange, among others.

Essentially, it provides a unified “language” that financial systems can use to communicate with each other efficiently, reliably, and unambiguously.

Zach Tynes, a community liaison at Chainlink, recently addressed a discussion on X regarding ISO 20022 compliance.

Responding to Charles Haskinson’s post, which highlighted that Cardano (ADA), Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR), Algorand (ALGO), Ripple (XRP), and IOTA are aligning with the ISO 20022 standard.

Tynes clarified, “There is no such thing as ‘ISO 20022-compliant cryptocurrencies.'” He added, however, that “oracle platforms like Chainlink do support ISO 20022 messaging, which is highlighted in Chainlink’s work with some of the largest financial institutions in the world.”

Traditional systems often cannot match the programmability and automation provided by blockchain and tokenized assets.

Chainlink bridges this gap, enabling institutions to continue using their trusted ISO 20022 workflows while taking advantage of the efficiency, transparency, and automated execution offered by smart contracts.

For context, Chainlink has already facilitated tens of trillions of dollars in transaction value and provided over 18 billion verified on-chain data points. We mentioned in our previous story that Chainlink earned both ISO 27001 and SOC 2 compliance.

This set a standard for secure and reliable data and interoperability services and made it the first Oracle platform in the industry to achieve this.

In 2025, Chainlink, SWIFT, and UBS collaborated on a pilot that demonstrated how traditional financial messaging standards can seamlessly interface with blockchain-based tokenized assets. So far, the pilot has been structured in two phases.

The list of participants in this industry initiative also includes DTCC, Euroclear, SIX, Orbix Technology, Marketnode, DBS Bank, ANZ, Kantonalbank, Vontobel, CTBC Bank, Causeway Capital Management, Sygnum Bank, and AMINA Bank.

According to Chainlink’s report, Phase 1 was a success, demonstrating that large language models (LLMs) could extract structured data and publish it on-chain as a unified golden record. A key milestone of this phase was the support for ISO 20022-compliant messages, which enabled direct delivery through the SWIFT network to downstream financial institutions.

The system also proved that it’s capable of processing corporate action disclosures in multiple languages, including Spanish and Chinese, further enhancing its global applicability.

Progress continued in Phase 2, where the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) was used to orchestrate and validate outputs from multiple AI models, while the Chainlink Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) distributed the confirmed records in real time across various blockchain ecosystems, including DTCC’s network, Avalanche, Hyperledger Besu, and ZKSync.

The CRE also coordinated consensus across the AI models and transformed the extracted data into ISO 20022-compliant messages.

This stage laid the groundwork for the expansion of tokenized asset markets, with the CCIP enabling institutions to interact with tokenized assets across more than 60 blockchains, with the tokenization market projected to reach $16 trillion by 2030.

Phase 3 will extend support to more complex corporate action events, such as stock splits, while continuing to uphold ISO 20022 compliance and interoperability across multiple platforms.

Lastly, Zach highlighted that SWIFT is updating its securities MT messaging standards to better accommodate the needs of the digital finance industry.

These updates will incorporate dedicated data fields for price oracles and blockchain transactions. Once live, SR 2025 will allow financial institutions to embed smart contract execution triggers, oracle-verified prices, and tokenized asset data directly into their messaging flows.
