AN ACROBAT fell to her death in front of a packed crowd of families at a circus show.
Marina B, 27, was pulling off a daring trapeze stunt in a big top in Bautzen, east Germany, when she plummeted to the floor.
The Spanish acrobat fell five metres from a trapeze swing during a solo performance at around 5:45pm on Saturday evening.
She died from her injuries on the spot as police and emergency services rushed to the scene.
Almost 100 people were watching the Paul Busch Circus show – including families with children.
Screams reportedly erupted from the audience, with parents covering their children’s eyes and many guests fleeing the tent.
The circus was forced to cancel its run of shows in the wake of the tragedy.
A note posted in the ticket booth on Sunday read: “Due to a bereavement, the circus will be closed.”
Ralf Huppertz, head of Germany’s circus association, speculated that Marina may have suffered a health problem.
He told German newspaper Bild: “It’s unusual for a well-trained artist like Marina to not survive a fall from just five meters.
“Perhaps she got dizzy on the trapeze.”
Police confirmed Marina had not been using a safety rope, but stressed that she wasn’t legally required to.
Police spokesman Stefan Heiduck said: “She doesn’t have to. She decides for herself whether to use safety rope.
“No one else was in the ring during the accident.”
Marina B, from Spanish holiday island Mallorca, had reportedly been booked by the Paul Busch Circus for its upcoming tour.
She once said of her profession: “For me, every show is an opportunity to share my passion for what I do.”
