There has been an alarming development after an 11-year-old girl gave birth in the United States, as DNA results reveal a match with her stepfather.
Dustin Walker, 34, has now been charged with the sexual abuse of a child after a paternity test showed a 99.9 per cent match between him and the baby.
His wife, Cherie Walker, 33, the girl’s mother, has been charged with enabling child sexual abuse.
The case first came to light on August 16, when the young girl was taken to hospital after she gave birth at home without any medical assistance in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
At the time, both parents were arrested and charged with child neglect.
Court filings obtained by NBC News show the girl hadn’t seen a doctor in over a year and had no prenatal care. Her parents claimed they had no idea she was pregnant.
But following a court-ordered DNA test, Mr Walker has been confirmed to the baby’s biological father.
“This is one of the most if not the most serious child sexual abuse and neglect cases I have ever prosecuted,” Muskogee County Assistant District Attorney Jane Hutson said in a statement.
“This child is traumatised. She’s been through a horrific ordeal. I mean, not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life.
“Each of the charges against both defendants are punishable by up to life,” she added.
The couple have also been charged with six counts of felony child neglect, after failing to provide their 11-year-old daughter with appropriate care when she gave birth at home.
The remaining five counts allege neglect of the five other children they share, who are aged between two and nine years old.
A neighbour reported the home lacked running water for two or three years despite six children and dogs living there, and said she regularly called authorities to check on the children. She said, “This is getting to me. They robbed her of her childhood.”
In the wake of the arrests, the girl’s grandmother, Michelle, publicly defended her daughter and son-in-law, claiming no one knew about the pregnancy.
“I just want people to know, we did not know this was happening. None of us,” she said.”They’ve made my daughter and my son-in-law a monster. They are not. They love those children. They love them.”

Before it was revealed Mr Walker was the baby’s biological father, Michelle said the baby’s father was a 12-year-old that she used to babysit.
“She keeps telling everybody that it was him. They got curious. That’s all I know.”
The couple will appear in court on September 3.
