Transport Department warns of misinformation after screenshot featuring claims of expanded scheme for local drivers circulates online
Hong Kong authorities have dispelled rumours about the potential expansion of a scheme allowing local vehicles to enter mainland China to include more border checkpoints.
A spokesman for the Transport Department also said on Sunday that it had referred the misinformation about the expansion of the Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles scheme to police for follow-up.
A screenshot of a WhatsApp message circulating on social media included claims that vehicles registered under the scheme could enter mainland China via four border crossings other than the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in the future.
The bridge is currently the only border checkpoint open to vehicles under the scheme.
The message also featured rumours that the bridge would be open to Guangdong vehicles travelling to Hong Kong.
But the department spokesman said that northbound travel via the scheme was only possible via the bridge at the moment.
“If there are new arrangements of any cross-boundary driving schemes, the government will issue press releases as official announcements for the public’s information,” he said.
