High Desert residents are rallying support in opposition to Proposition 50, which has California residents torn.
The organization High Desert Patriots is throwing a ‘No on Prop. 50’ protest two weeks before the special election on Nov. 4.
According to the group, people who are fed up with skyrocketing costs and government overreach will unite under a common cause. The group is calling for fair elections, the founders told the Daily Press.
“California families are being squeezed from every angle,” said Johnny Garcia, spokesperson for the High Desert Patriots. “Gas prices are breaking records, housing is unaffordable, grocery bills are through the roof, and crime and homelessness are spreading across our communities.”
The High Desert Patriots say it’s time to restore transparency and fairness in California. The group urges residents to show up at the protest and take a stand against Gov. Gavin Newsom.
“Our message is simple,” Garcia added. “We’re taking back our voice. We’re demanding accountability and protecting our freedoms. It’s time to end the corruption, reject the one-party monopoly, and bring back integrity to our government.”
The protest is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Bear Valley Road Park & Ride.
What is Proposition 50?
Proposition 50 will determine whether the state will redraw congressional district lines by bypassing the California Citizens Redistricting Commission and the state.
If passed, the newly drawn congressional map will be temporary as it will be used until 2030, and for the midterm elections in 2026.
According to USA Today, the decision on whether to allow redistricting will impact the entire nation. The proposition plays a substantial role in deciding which party controls the U.S. House for the last two years of President Donald Trump’s time in office.
Historically, the president’s party loses seats in a midterm election, the news outlet reported. To combat that, President Trump started urging states, including Texas, to redraw their district boundaries before 2026.
So far, Texas already has. Over the summer, the state legislature redrew the district lines, making five seats that were traditionally democratic lean more heavily toward Republicans. California is trying to mitigate what Texas has done and keep it a little bit more level, making sure that Democrats have a strong chance of taking control of the House in 2026, USA Today says.
