If there is one thing that HGTV will do, it’s stand strong in its convictions. Even if you’ve been a part of the family for years, there’s no protection after a tragic mistake. Such is the case for Nicole Curtis and her HGTV series Rehab Addict. After the HGTV star was caught using a racial slur while filming the series, the network has decided to cancel the show. Further, they have removed the series from all platforms.

Rehab Addict was set to return on Wednesday, February 11, but when the video of Curtis using the n-word was shared via Radar Online that day, the fate of the series was officially changed. In the clip, Curtis immediately catches herself, asking to “kill” the moment, but it still seeped online despite her efforts. Having been with Rehab Addict since 2010, Curtis’ comeback has been officially canned. Curtis is not the first reality star to be fired for their controversial remarks, serving as a reminder that words have serious consequences.

Nicole Curtis Is Out at HGTV For Good Reason

After the clip of Curtis went viral, the HGTV star had little leeway before the network came to its final decision to pull the plug on her show. In a statement shared with People, HGTV shared that it was “recently made aware of an offensive racial comment made during the filming of Rehab Addict. Not only is language like this hurtful and disappointing to our viewers, partners, and employees, but it also does not align with the values of HGTV. Accordingly, we have removed the series from all HGTV platforms. We remain dedicated to fostering a culture of respect and inclusion across our content and our workplace.”

For her part, Curtis shared a statement with TMZ apologizing, saying, “I want to be clear: the word in question is wrong and not part of my vocabulary and never has been, and I apologize to everyone.” She also shared the moment on her personal Instagramstory, writing in part, “There is more to this, but my family comes first, and I need to be mom right now more than anything.” Rather than being met with privacy, Curtis revealed via screenshots that her inbox was flooded with nasty comments, including accusations of her being a racist.

While the comments may be unwarranted, Curtis is not trying to soften the blow of her actions; rather, she’s fueling the fire. From a public relations perspective, it would have been a stronger decision to own the poor actions, apologize, and allow herself to learn from her mistake. Instead, she’s attempting to play the victim of her own circumstance, which is unlikely to curry favor, especially in this political climate. Other HGTV stars have not been immune to controversy, including Home Town’s Erin Napier, who also faced social media backlash after being attacked for her parenting skills and personal beliefs. But unlike Curtis, HGTV made no mention of that controversy, as it was not done on camera while filming the hit series. Curtis has found herself in a predicament of her own making. Unfortunately, she’ll face harsh consequences of little public sympathy.

The series, which followed Curtis as she worked to restore properties slated for demolition, briefly returned in June 2025 after an extended break. At that time, Curtis noted that she “had a setback in my life that just rocked me to the core, and it was one of those moments where I thought, how do I get through this one?” After only two episodes, Curtis decided to pause new episodes until the Fall and recut the remaining episodes. Unfortunately, that return has been officially shattered.

Curtis is not the only reality star to land in hot water this week. Following Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show, Jill Zarin, of The Real Housewives of New York City fame, and Taylor Armstrong, originally of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, took to social media to express their displeasure with the appearance and language. With fans and Bravo stars perceiving their comments to be racist, the swift backlash caused massive ramifications for Zarin. Previously announced to be in the cast of the upcoming E! series, The Golden Life, featuring the RHONY OG’s, Zarin was fired. Unfortunately, Zarin attempted to rectify her video, but it was too late as the series had already made its decision. Zarin is to be replaced by Dorinda Medley.

This week has shown that reality stars are facing the consequences of their actions. While other individuals in the country seem to be immune, networks have decided to distance themselves from those who do not represent their brand in a positive light. While we do love to give people second chances, some situations require swift and immediate action.

HGTV shows are available to stream on HBO Max.
