Central District Health Department supports the overall community health of Grand Island. Karley Simonson, deputy director, says public health is all about the community and helping individuals make the best choices for themselves and their family’s health.
“We do this through offering services, some prevention focused like screening and vaccines,” said Simonson. “Public health also doesn’t happen in a vacuum, we work a lot with community partnerships.”
Another large part of their work is education. They work to help the community build better health habits. Ashley Hake, health promotion manager, says that monitoring your screen time, eating nutritious foods and sleeping well can improve your health.
“Drink more water, eat fruits and vegetables and kind of try to eat the rainbow,” said Hake.
Incorporating exercise is also important. Whether it’s going to the gym, dancing or doing yardwork when the weather is nice, it all counts.
“Small changes are more important than perfection,” said Hake. “It’s really about balance.”
