Haryana makes reciting Bhagavad Gita shlokas in school assemblies mandatory

Implementation starts next academic term in all Haryana schools

The Haryana School Education Board has directed all schools in the state to include the recitation of verses from Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in their daily prayer meetings.

In a letter sent to school principals, the Board’s Chairman stated that reading these verses will support the all-round development of students.

According to the HSEB, the teachings of the Gita offer moral and spiritual guidance that can positively influence young minds. The move is intended to promote values such as discipline, responsibility, and focus among schoolchildren.

“The motive behind introducing the recitation of Bhagavad Gita verses to school prayer meetings is that children should learn from the spirituality and the knowledge that the scripture holds in abundance and follow them in their daily life to benefit society,” Pawan Kumar, HSEB Chairman, said.

“We want to see a change in future generations that will become an example to the world and help India become the Vishwaguru, as PM Modi has also said. In olden times, people from all over the world used to come to India to gain spiritual knowledge. India’s spiritual knowledge is the best in the world,” he added.

The decision applies to both government and private schools affiliated with the HSEB. School principals have been asked to ensure that selected verses are read regularly during morning assemblies.

This development follows ongoing efforts by the state to integrate cultural and value-based learning into the school curriculum. While some educators support the move for its moral lessons, it may also raise debates about the role of religious texts in public education.

Officials have clarified that the verses will be presented in a way that focuses on their philosophical and educational value, not religious instruction.

The implementation is expected to begin in the upcoming academic term across schools in Haryana.
