
AIKEN — Visitors to Aiken State Park will be able to discover its history during a special program.
A walking tour titled Hike with a Ranger: Discovering Local History of Aiken State Park, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Aiken State Park. The guided hike will be led by special guest tour guide Dr. Walter B. Curry Jr., founder of Renaissance Publications & Educational Programs.
Th tour, which will start at the park office, is designed to explore the area’s unique history. Participants will learn about the Sandhills, the turpentine industry and the South Edisto River.
A key focus of the tour will be recognizing the vital role played by the African American detachment of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the park’s development and local heritage.
The hike is $10. Attendees are asked to wear comfortable shoes suitable for hiking and bring water, snacks and bug spray.
