CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – American Airlines issued a ground stop at Charlotte Douglas International Airport amid heavy snow on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The American Airlines-only ground stop began at 3:45 p.m. and was originally set to go through 7 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) website.
The ground stop came as Charlotte saw its biggest snowfall in years, with several inches having fallen by Saturday afternoon. Snow showers were forecast to continue through Saturday evening and night before they wrapped up overnight.
More than 1,000 flights were canceled at Charlotte Douglas on Saturday, according to FlightAware data.
The airport itself remained open but said travelers should check flight statuses directly with their airlines before they come.
A 300-person team was working “continuously” to keep runways, taxiways and other surfaces cleared, the airport said.
Even after the snow moves out, cold temperatures will linger Sunday and into the start of next week.
