Green Mobility in Paradise: How Bali, Indonesia’s New All-Electric Taxi Service is Revolutionizing Sustainable Tourism – Travel And Tour World

The introduction of advanced, environmentally conscious transport solutions is fundamentally changing the landscape of Bali tourism. On February 27, 2026, a significant milestone was reached as Green SM’s all-electric taxi service was officially launched on the island. This venture is carried out through a strategic partnership with Taksi Komotra, a long-standing member of the local transport community. The introduction of these distinctive cyan-coloured vehicles is regarded as a watershed moment in aligning the island’s mobility needs with the global shift towards environmental responsibility. By combining cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) platforms with deep-rooted local expertise, the initiative aims to provide a seamless and emission-free experience for both international visitors and local residents.

The operational framework of this new service is built upon a synergy between international innovation and local heritage. Under this collaboration, the comprehensive technology platform and a modern fleet of VinFast electric vehicles are provided by Green SM. Simultaneously, the extensive local network and operational insights of Taksi Komotra are utilized to ensure the service is perfectly tailored to the unique geography of Bali. It is noteworthy that Taksi Komotra, which operates under the Koperasi Mobil Transport Bali, has been a fixture of the region’s infrastructure since 1993. This partnership is seen as more than just a business agreement; it is considered a model for how global sustainability standards can be successfully merged with local traditional cooperatives to modernize public transport.

A commitment to excellence is maintained through a rigorous framework known as the “5 Green Promises”. Each journey is governed by these core tenets to ensure that high-quality standards are consistently met. These include the provision of modern, well-maintained electric vehicles and the deployment of drivers who are extensively trained as professional green mobility ambassadors. Furthermore, transparent pricing structures are implemented to foster trust among passengers. The broader environmental impact is also prioritized, as every kilometre driven by the fleet is calculated to contribute to a reduction in the island’s carbon footprint. By adhering to these principles, a superior travel experience is delivered without compromising the ecological integrity of the destination.

The launch of the service was intentionally synchronized with the 238th anniversary of Denpasar City, emphasizing the brand’s integration into the local cultural and civic calendar. To celebrate this dual occasion, significant fare promotions were introduced, allowing the public to experience the benefits of electric mobility at a reduced cost. Exclusive discounts were made available through the Green SM application, which serves as the primary digital gateway for booking rides. This strategic entry into the Balinese market is bolstered by the success of previous expansions in major Indonesian hubs, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar. The positive reception in these urban centres has provided a blueprint for the island’s rollout, where the demand for premium, quiet, and clean transportation is rapidly increasing.

The deployment of an all-electric fleet is in direct alignment with the provincial government’s vision for a “Green Bali”. Legislative efforts, such as Governor Regulation No. 48 of 2019 concerning the use of Battery-Based Electric Vehicles, have laid the groundwork for such private-sector initiatives. These government policies are designed to accelerate the transition toward clean energy and low-carbon development across the province. By replacing traditional internal combustion engines with zero-emission alternatives, the preservation of Bali’s natural landscapes and air quality is actively supported. Furthermore, this initiative is expected to bolster the “Love Bali” programme, which seeks to protect the island’s cultural and natural environment through sustainable tourism levies and high-quality service improvements.

Central to the operational success of the new taxi service is the “Green SM Driver” ecosystem. Professional development pathways are offered to local drivers, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary for the future of the transport industry. Drivers are guided by a value system that emphasizes discipline, dedication, and professionalism. Through this structure, stable income opportunities are generated, contributing to the socio-economic well-being of the Balinese community. The role of the driver is elevated from a traditional transporter to an ambassador of sustainable living, reflecting the island’s philosophy of harmony between people, technology, and nature.

The expansion into Bali marks a major achievement in the national journey toward a sustainable transport network. As Indonesia continues to develop its domestic electric vehicle industry and charging infrastructure, the presence of scalable, governance-driven models like Green SM is crucial. The island serves as a high-profile testing ground where the viability of large-scale EV adoption can be demonstrated to the world. It is anticipated that the lessons learned from the Balinese operation will inform future urban planning and tourism strategies across the archipelago. The transition to electric mobility is no longer viewed as a distant goal but as a present reality that is actively enhancing the travel landscape of Southeast Asia’s most iconic destination.

Modern travellers are increasingly looking for digital-first solutions that prioritise usability and reliability. The Green SM application aims to meet these expectations by providing a simple interface for trip booking and real-time tracking. Using this technology, passengers have a high level of control and safety throughout their journey. The presence of multiple service tiers ensures that the needs of various groups — from solo business travellers to families with heavy luggage — are met. As the fleet expands, the integration of these digital tools is expected to set a new standard for transport efficiency in Bali, bringing the island one step closer to achieving its smart city and sustainable tourism goals.
