Fallen gospel music songbird Grace Chinga’s three children have released a tribute, almost a decade after their mother’s death.
Born on June 28 1978, Chinga died on March 16 2016, leaving three children, namely Israel Chinga-Moffat, Miracle Chinga-Moffat and Steve Spesho, who continue to carry her gospel mission.
Chikho is the title of the song the three have released in honour of their mother. The song is also a remix of Grace Chinga’s original song titled Chikho Changa.
The children described the song as a befitting tribute to the fallen gospel artist.
In an interview, Israel said his mother deserves honour for her contribution to the gospel music industry.
He said: “First and foremost, Grace Chinga was our beloved mother who introduced us to the music industry. She loved her family and wished the best for her children.
“That is why we are following her footprints in music. Secondly, Grace Chinga was a gospel music icon for Malawi. She was a messenger of the Gospel and gave hope to many through her music. Therefore, she deserves a tribute.”
Israel said that in the song, they give thanks to God for their mother’s life and contributions to Malawi’s gospel music.
Gospel musician Khama Khwiliro described Grace Chinga as one of the most talented gospel musicians.
“Her legacy continues to reign as one of the legends of Malawi music. She produced great songs such as Wayalula, Kolona, Abisalomu, Palibe Bwenzi and many more,” he said.
Music commentator Wonderful Mkhutche also hailed the late Grace Chinga whom he authored a biography for.
In earlier interview, he described the late Chinga as a phenomenal gospel artist whose legacy cannot be ignored.
Said Mkhutche: “She knew how to compose songs and to express her beliefs. It is, therefore, no wonder that her music has lived on and the book carries on from there.
“Chinga was also a social butterfly who enjoyed being around people. Not forgetting that she was a hardworking mother who raised three children who are also doing well in the music industry.”
In separate interviews, some of Grace Chinga’s fans, welcomed the tribute.
Blantyre resident Chifundo Phiri said Grace Chinga’s music gave her hope in the face of challenges.
She said: “Here was a gospel musician whose songs resonated with many of us.
“When we were down with sickness, we just had to listen to her songs, such as Wayalula, and hope would be ignited.”
Another fan Twaha Amidu said he still listens to Grace Chinga’s songs as their messages are relevant, 10 years after she departed from the earth.
“I appeal to her children to continue celebrating the life of their mother,” he said.
