Gorilla was established in 1999, five years before the decision was made to bring Doctor Who to Wales.
Doctor Who’s lasting legacy in Wales is now being replicated across the UK as more and more BBC programmes and services move their content outside of London and into the nations and regions.
Gorilla is the prominent player in end-to-end post-production within Wales, holding the distinction of being the largest and most successful of its kind in the Nation with a record as a pioneering and inspiring post-production company.
From its origins as a single linear Online suite, Gorilla has evolved into a comprehensive post-production facility, including over one hundred edit rooms, HETV colour grading with Baselight and Resolve, ten audio suites featuring Dolby Atmos and dedicated VFX and Motion Graphics departments. The company operates two live TV studios and gallery, satellite and broadcast lines and offers around-the-clock 24/7 services in two Cardiff locations, along with a newly constructed Bristol facility built specifically for today’s hybrid production workflows.
Throughout its three-decade presence in the Welsh market, Gorilla has adapted seamlessly to the industry’s shifting landscape. The company has consistently delivered excellence across diverse genres, encompassing Children’s programming, Sports, Entertainment, Factual content, and Scripted productions, including HETV. Notable works include high-volume series such as “Bargain Hunt”, “Countryfile” and “Gardeners World”, alongside scripted projects such as “Doctor Who”, “War of the Worlds”, “The Lazarus Project”, “Industry” and “Men Up. The company’s VFX team has contributed to many prestigious projects, including Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City”, “Heartstopper”, and Netflix’s “Tim”.
As innovators, Gorilla introduced remote and hybrid working environments in 2017, well before the pandemic! In 2021 we established our “Remote Services Team” which has been pivotal in facilitating remote work for production and freelance communities. This strategic investment has enabled Gorilla to expand its operational capacity, broadening its reach and solidifying its status as a leading post-production facility.
Gorilla is a bilingual company delivering over 400 hrs of Welsh language content, including Children’s, factual and drama. As a leading Welsh company, we also support many local organisations such as Bafta Cymru, RTS Cymru and the Iris Prize. Training and developing the talent pool in Wales is core to our business. As a pillar of the Welsh Creative Industry for the last 25 years we have been able to provide opportunities for entrants and nurture them through to senior creative and management positions. Our trained alumni have gone on to start their own businesses or joined the successful freelance talent pool – many now working on Doctor Who.
Also, the recently launched Gorilla Academy offers specialised industry-specific training across various facets of post-production. The Academy also engages in outreach programmes with schools and colleges, fostering partnerships with organisations such as NFTS, Screenskills and Screen Alliance Wales. These collaborative efforts create a varied entry point for local talents aspiring to join the industry, resulting in a notably diverse workforce that Gorilla takes great pride in.
