TROY, Ohio (WKEF)– We’re just one day away from the CenterPoint Energy Dayton Airshow presented by Kroger. Dayton 24/7 Now’s, Kysha Hancock went to Waco Airfield in Troy and went up in the air on the Goodyear Blimp, which will be on display all weekend at the big event.
“It’s one of the more notable military aviation shows in the country, so for us to be able to come down and participate with all the other static displays on the ground…we’re super excited about it,” said Michael Doughtery, chief pilot and operations manager for the Goodyear Airship Operation team.
For the first time in 20 years, the Goodyear Blimp will be making its way back to the Dayton Air Show this weekend. It’s part of celebrations for the blimp program’s 100th anniversary.
Dougherty said he can’t wait to show it off to thousands this weekend.
“When we take off and land it’s a vertical takeoff and landing like a helicopter is, but once we get up and flying the control is a like an airplane, but it kinda meanders around in the sky like an air current like a boat,” said Doughtery.
Hancock got the chance to ride in the famous blimp and was thousands of feet in the air, which she said was exciting for her because she does like heights.
Hancock also caught up with others who went up in the air. Jake Jones said he loved the experience.
“When you first step on there, it feels like magic and it’s like you just float right up…it’s an experience you’ll never forget,” said Jones.
Jones took to the skies with his girlfriend and family. He told Hancock their fun won’t end here, as they’re all looking forward to having a great time at the actual air show this weekend.
“Of course, seeing the Blue Angels and all the cool tricks, but just the excitement the community has for something that wouldn’t happen without the city is what’s gonna be the most thrilling thing to me,” said Jones.
Chief Pilot Dougherty said although the Goodyear team is excited to show off the blimp, they also can’t wait to see and learn about other aircrafts in the show.
