Two films about the war in Gaza have received major honours at this year’s Cinema for Peace awards in Berlin, as the annual gala once again highlighted global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

The Voice of Hind Rajab, about a Palestinian girl killed during the war, was awarded the prize for “most valuable film”.

Noam Tibon, a former Israeli general and the central figure in the Canadian documentary The Road Between Us, was honoured for rescuing his family during the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Tibon had a for his 35-year career in special forces before he initiated the rescue of his son’s family from Kibbutz Nahal Oz during the Hamas attack.

Founded in 2002, the Cinema for Peace foundation recognises films and individuals committed to peace, as well as social and environmental causes.

Among the hosts of the gala at Berlin’s Hotel Adlon was musician and philanthropist Bob Geldof.

Geldof delivered sharp criticism of US President Donald Trump over his dismissal of climate change as a hoax.

“He is a f***king idiot and he should shut up,” Geldof said.

Among the guests were former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who has longstanding ties to the foundation, and US actor Kevin Spacey.

Other award recipients included former South African Constitutional Court judge Albie Sachs, honoured for his fight against apartheid, and a Ukrainian boy, Roman, featured in the documentary Children in the Fire.

Roman, who was severely injured in the conflict and continues to bear its scars, addressed the audience about the impact of war on children, saying he was speaking as a voice for Ukrainian children.

He said children want to dream, go to school and be happy, but that the war had destroyed everything.
