The business world is changing in a way that it has never done before. A paradigm shift in the way organisations approach their operations is taking place because of the impact of emerging new technologies, the climate emergency needs, current demand changes in the workforce and the economic instability in the global environment. In this rapidly evolving environment, it is no longer sufficient to only make use of previous experience or conventional management wisdom to understand the new environment. Rather, they need to develop future-ready leadership, the capacity to foresee, evolve, and make a decision in a world that does not stand still.

The issue which the senior management is no longer concerned with is whether change will occur but what is the preparedness level with which it will come. In this blog, the author discusses what it takes to be a future-ready leader and why the focus of organisations should be the development of their leaders in 2025 and beyond.

Preparing for the future demands more than experience, it requires a willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn. The IIM Calcutta Senior Management Program is an example of how forward-looking leadership development equips executives with the strategic, digital, and people skills to stay ahead of disruptive change.

The concept of what a successful senior leader is will continue to change as we approach 2025. Seeing what others cannot, being able to evolve quickly and being resilient has become the new business genius. Top managers are put with the responsibility of connecting the present business with the future ones, but not only focusing on making it profitable in the short run, but also in the long run.

Your industry is being redesigned because of artificial intelligence, automation and data-driven decisions. Leaders must embrace such technologies as part of their business strategy and deal with such human consequences of digital transformation as employee attrition and the necessity of efficacy in the digitally transformed workforce.

The new hybrid work models, new employee demands, and the emergence of a lifestyle career place new challenges on leaders who have to redesign their approaches to engagement, inspiration, and retention of the best talent.

Executive leaders have to face what is happening in the world in terms of volatility, supply chain disturbance, and regulatory modifications on top of business flexibility.

There is a responsibility towards the environmental and social impact imposed on companies. Future-ready leaders translate the ability to be sustainable as an ethical prerequisite and a competitive advantage.

Senior managers in 2025 and beyond will have to learn a new skill set of leadership competencies:

This is the skill to detect changes in the business environment, change strategy rapidly and make good decisions even in an uncertain environment.

The knowledge of how to leverage technology, including AI, advanced analytics, and modern technology, can be utilised to generate business value, enhance customer experiences, and simplify operations.

Supporting multi-generational, cross-functional teams with the knowledge, skills and tools that will enable them to work together, innovate and become successful.

The way to counter the issues of cross-border business and how to utilise the differences in the culture so as to become creative.

Being empathetic as a leader, being able to stay level-headed in times of trouble, as well as the capability to instigate confidence in people during such turbulent times.

Life education must be the commitment of the top management. Relevancy is accompanied by executive education, leadership development, and cross-industry exposure, and that is the required tool kit.

Making decisions based on data is no longer an option. Analytics is required by firms to predict trends, personalize customer experiences and come up with more accurate and faster strategic decisions.

There are better leaders in organisations who are purpose-driven as compared to other leaders. To be able to meet the challenges of tomorrow, executives must be prepared with a vision that would inspire the other members of the workforc,e and it cannot just be all about profit.

Agile organisations are in a position to make agile changes as the market changes. The executives are encouraged to promote a culture in the organisation that will support innovations, experimentation and strategic risks.

Top-tier executives ought to integrate sustainability in their company plan and strategy, not necessarily to accrue any compulsory need but rather as an agent of innovation and brand credibility.

Despite the appropriate attitude and competencies, top management will not be allowed. It will have to go through hard times, including:

Complete a Leadership Skills Inventory-What are strong areas and what could be more developed?

The future decade will be owned by those leaders who will be able to adapt even quicker than the change itself. Future-ready leadership is not about a prophet saying the future or a future forecaster, it is more about a prepared situation that values leading the future.

Similarly to the way industries change, leaders who inform them have to change as well. One case in point is the IIM Senior Management Program, which, according to the report, is capable of imparting skills to the executive to survive in uncertainty, lead with a purpose and create a lasting effect.

By 2025 and beyond, not only will business achievements be used to assess the effectiveness of senior leaders; their success in being inspiring, innovative and in helping to create resilient organisations poised to take on the challenges and opportunities in the future is also going to be important.
