Furman pulls away late for win over The Citadel, 72-51

(Furman Athletics) Furman held The Citadel to just 20 second-half points as the Paladins claimed a 72-51 win on Senior Night at Timmons Arena to secure head coach Bob Richey’s 200th career victory.With the win, Furman improved to 19-11 overall and 10-7 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel dropped to 9-21 on the season and 6-11 in the SoCon.The Paladins limited The Citadel to 33.3% (8-24) shooting in the second half and finished the game on a 29-10 run to earn a regular-season split of the home-and-home series versus the Bulldogs in the 225th meeting between the SoCon rivals. After The Citadel trimmed Furman’s lead to 43-41 with 15:07 to go, the Paladins embarked on a 14-3 run over the next eight minutes while holding the Bulldogs to a single basket for a stretch of over 8:30. Cooper Bowser capped the Furman run with a pair of dunks and two free throws to help the Paladins build a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.Bowser, who did not play in the first meeting against The Citadel, tallied a team-high 14 points and senior Charles Johnston posted his 11th double-double of the year and 16thdouble-digit rebounding performance with 13 points and 13 boards. Senior Tom House went 4-for-4 at the foul line to add 11 points.Furman dominated down low against the Bulldogs with a 36-26 scoring edge in the paint and a commanding 50-20 rebounding advantage.
