Frontier Airlines Weighing Up Onboard Wi-Fi As First Class Cabin Nears Debut

As technology advances and the provision of in-flight WiFi becomes available with more carriers, American low-cost carrier, Frontier Airlines, is expected to be the next carrier to offer onboard connectivity to its passengers. This proposed upgrade comes in time for the carrier to start offering first-class services on board.

While the potential of introducing in-flight WiFi was only floated around earlier this week, the fact that the carrier will introduce a first-class cabin on board its aircraft was announced by the carrier earlier in the year. Simple Flying has reached out to the airline, requesting details on the potential WiFi services the airline might introduce. Any response will be updated in this article.

Frontier Airlines To Introduce In-Flight WiFi

While the deal is not confirmed and the details are very few, as reported by View From The Wing, the airline gained attention recently when the CEO, Barry Biffle, of Frontier Airlines recently replied to a social media comment regarding in-flight WiFi, stating that “it’s coming.”

While all the full-service carriers in the country had in-flight connectivity, so did almost all the low-cost carriers, with the exceptions being the likes of Frontier and Allegiant Air. However, with this comment from the airline’s CEO, this is soon set to change. A key detail most flyers of Frontier would want to know is how the connectivity will be accessible? Would passengers have to pay for it, or will the airline rely on revenue from advertisements to make the connectivity free?

An article from The Points Guy reported the following statement from a Frontier spokesperson,

“Competition among potential vendors is heading up and they are eager to work with us.”

Furthermore, CNBC reports from 2022 indicate that the airline did have a conversation with SpaceX with regards to introducing Starlink WiFi onboard the aircraft, and at the time, the airline CEO stated the following,

“When the price gets cheap enough, I’ll put in on.”

Earlier this year, the airline made an announcement which that indicated the carrier is pivoting from its traditional low-cost operating model by stating its intention to introduce a first-class cabin onboard its aircraft towards the end of this year. However, in the airline’s more recent press releases, the carrier states that this new product will debut onboard its aircraft starting from early 2026.

The carrier currently operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 (ceo and neo variants of both) configured in a high-density, all-economy cabin configuration. The airline’s fleet page shows the following aircraft capacity data:

Aircraft Type

Number of Seats

A320ceo

3-3

Middle seat blocked

on rows 1 and 2

A320neo

186

A321ceo

A321neo

rows 28, 29, and 41.

The carrier already offers five different seat categories with its A320s and six, when it comes to the larger A321s. These categories include Upfront Plus, which are the first two rows of the aircraft that have the middle seat blocked off, followed by Premium, Preferred, Exit Rows, and Standard, all of which would have a different pricing category. The proposed First Class product in a 2-2 configuration would naturally see the aircraft capacity decrease, but it would allow the airline to charge higher fares to utilize these seats.

New Routes & Discounted Flight Passes

Frontier Airlines also recently announced that it will be launching four new routes early next year, which will see the carrier launch on Newark – Orlando, Orlando – Pensacola, Salt Lake City – Tucson, and Miami – Chicago routes with a single way introductory fares starting from $29.

All these routes are planned to be operated on twice or thrice weekly basis, with the routes scheduled to be across the second half of January and the first half of February. Simultaneously, the carrier has launched its GoWild annual pass, at a promotional rate of $349, which allows the holder to fly across a network of over 100 destinations.

Strategically, this helps the carrier gain new customers, while maintaining the loyalty of existing customers, thereby placing the carrier as the forefront low-cost option across the US. The availability of this pass, paired with the introduction of a new first-class product and onboard WiFi, will help the airline be more competitive, increase its revenue, while also provide its customers with an enhanced inflight experience.
