Newly uncovered call logs suggest Argentine President Javier Milei may have been in contact with one of the entrepreneurs behind the Libra token multiple times on the night he promoted it, raising fresh doubts about his claim of having no ties to the project.
According to records obtained by Argentine prosecutors and reviewed by The New York Times, there were reportedly seven phone calls between Milei and the unnamed entrepreneur both before and after he shared a promotional post about Libra on X. The content of those conversations remains unknown.
The fallout from the token’s collapse has been significant, with Argentine lawyers filing fraud charges against Milei and some calling for his impeachment. In Argentina, fraud convictions can carry prison sentences ranging from one month to six years.
The controversy dates back to February 2025, when Milei promoted the Libra token on X as a tool to support Argentina’s economy by funding small businesses and startups. The token briefly surged before crashing more than 96% from its peak, resulting in investor losses estimated at $251 million. Milei later deleted the post, fueling allegations of a potential rug pull.
Milei has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was simply endorsing what he believed to be a private initiative and had no direct involvement in the project.
“I posted a tweet, as I have done countless times before, supporting what appeared to be a private venture with which I have absolutely no connection,” he said on X.
“I was unaware of the details of the project, and once I learned more, I chose not to continue promoting it, which is why I deleted the post.”

A federal investigation into the Libra token collapse is ongoing, with prosecutors naming Javier Milei as a person of interest.
Argentina’s Anti-Corruption Office previously cleared Milei of breaching public ethics rules last June, concluding that his post was made in a personal capacity rather than as president.
However, a March update in the judicial probe revealed a draft document found on the phone of crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli, suggesting a potential $5 million agreement tied to the promotion of the Libra token.
The note was reportedly created just three days before Milei’s post on X, though it does not indicate who was intended to receive the funds.
