Former Spurs goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi socred a bizarre own goal for Wellington Phoenix in their clash with Auckland FC.

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi scored an absolute howler of an own goal for Wellington Phoenix in their clash with Auckland FC. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who signed for the New Zealand outfit in 2024, came through Spurs’ academy set-up but failed to register a senior appearance.

The goalkeeper has been a regular for the Kiwi side since his move to the southern hemisphere and started their clash with Auckland FC on Friday afternoon. With the score level at 0-0, disaster struck as Oluwayemi scored a bizarre own goal sparking the begining of a nightmare afternoon.

In the 24th minute, Auckland defender Jake Girdwood-Reich punted the ball upfield clearing his lines, it sailed over the Phoenix back line and towards Oluwayemi who was well out of his box.

Despite not beind under any pressure, the former Spurs academy talent tried to head the ball clear but got his clearance all wrong and headed the ball into the back of his own net from outside the 18-yard box.

Commentators were taken aback by the incident, gasping as the former Spurs youngster made the error, while fans and players were also bemused.

Football fans on social media have dubbed the incident “own-goal of the year,” and it’s hard to argue otherwise.

Things would get worse for the Nix in the New Zealand derby, with Auckland running out 5-0 winners and Wellington head coach Giancarlo Italiano stepping down as a result.

Jesse Randal doubled Auckland’s lead on the half hour mark to pile more misery on Oluwayemi, before collapsing at the end of the second half.

Guillermo May scored a third four minutes before half-time, with Randall scoring his second in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

The Nix had a mountain to climb and Lachlan Brook completed the route for the visitors on the 74 minute.

Oluwayemi joined Tottenham in 2011 as a ten-year-old and spent nine years in the north London club’s youth set up.

He was given a professional contract and promoted to the first team in 2020 but failed to make a senior appearance and had a loan spell Maidenhead United.

Oluwayemi would leave Spurs in 2022 and moce to Portsmouth, enjoying another loan spell in the National League system with Chelmsford City, before leaving Pompey in 2024.

After a brief stint in Finland with Lahti, he made the move to New Zealand and signed for Wellington where he’s amassed 31 appearances to date.
