The NFL never stops making headlines, and one of the biggest stories this week was the firing of Brian Daboll as head coach of the New York Giants, after nearly completing four seasons with the team. The concussion suffered by Jaxson Dart and the painful loss to the Chicago Bears ultimately became the breaking point behind the decision.
There’s no doubt the Giants made the right choice in selecting Jaxson Dart in the first round of the Draft. At the time, the former Ole Miss quarterback was projected as a second- or third-round pick, but his impact has proven otherwise. If that draft were held again, there’s no question he’d be the first quarterback selected.
Although Daboll made the right call at quarterback, the results didn’t back him up. After posting a 20-40-1 record over four seasons, he leaves his position with the Giants. This year alone, the team blew four games in which they held leads of 10 or more points.
Following Daboll’s dismissal, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was named the Giants’ interim head coach for the remainder of the season. However, numerous names have already surfaced as potential candidates for next year’s permanent role – a position that looks increasingly attractive thanks to the presence of a young franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart.
Earlier this offseason, after five years in charge, the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Mike McCarthy, who quickly became a candidate for openings with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. However, he didn’t land either job. Still, reports suggest McCarthy could soon return to the NFC East.
Looking ahead to 2026, the New York Giants are expected to conduct interviews for the head coach vacancy, and Moe Moton of Bleacher Report has identified Mike McCarthy as one of the top candidates – noting his proven ability to develop quarterbacks, as he once did with Aaron Rodgers. While the idea has sparked mixed opinions, there’s no denying McCarthy’s extensive experience.
“Mike McCarthy would be the safest choice among the potential candidates, with the best résumé. He’s a proven Super Bowl-winning head coach with a winning record at two historic franchises – the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys,” wrote Moton. “In Green Bay, McCarthy molded Aaron Rodgers during his early years. Also, under his tutelage, Dak Prescott led the league in QBR (73.4), completions (410), and touchdown passes (36) during a Pro Bowl 2023 campaign.”
We’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the season unfolds, but McCarthy won’t be the only coach interested in taking on the Giants project. There’s also speculation about whether Joe Schoen will remain as general manager – though indications suggest he likely will.
