Music fans were thrilled as Foo Fighters confirmed they would be playing their only UK tour dates in Liverpool next year. The US band are fronted by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and are known for huge rock anthems such as ‘All My Life,’ ‘The Pretender,’ ‘Best Of You’ and ‘My Hero’.
The group confirmed they will be one of the superstar acts gracing the stage at L4 in 2026 with two shows on Thursday, June 25 and Saturday, June 27. It won’t be the first time that Dave has performed at Anfield as he appeared on stage with Sir Paul McCartney in 2008 for the legendary Beatle’s show in celebration of Capital of Culture.
The two enjoy a close friendship, which has sparked some speculation Sir Paul could return the favour next year in the same way he did at Bruce Springsteen’s shows this past summer. The two have played together on stage a number of times, most recently at Glastonbury Festival in 2022.
Dave has lifted the lid on their friendship during numerous interviews previously. He told Graham Norton in 2022 how the friendship gained momentum due to the bond between their wives, Jordyn Blum and Nancy Shevell.
He said: “His wife [Nancy] and my wife [Jordyn] swapped numbers. So every time he’d come to Los Angeles, his wife would text my wife and say: “hey, we’re going to dinner, would you like to come to dinner. Of course my wife knows who Paul McCartney is but I don’t know if he means the same to her as he does to me.
“He’s a Beatle. That’s how I learned to play music.” Dave explained how Sir Paul and Nancy arranged to come over to their house after the birth of youngest child Ophelia.
He added: “Of course, my kids know who the Beatles are because I brainwashed them when they were young with all of the Beatles music.
“We have wine, pizza, and we’re hanging out. And it’s time for Paul to go. Paul and Nancy were leaving. There’s a piano in the corner of the room and he just can’t help himself, you know.
“So he sits down at the piano and he starts playing Lady Madonna in my f*****g house. And my mind is blown. I can’t believe this is happening. This is the most full circle, crazy moment of my entire life. My daughter, Harper, who I think was five at the time, is watching Paul McCartney on the piano.
“She goes to the kitchen, gets a coffee cup, she puts some spare change in it and puts it on top of the piano like it’s a tip jar. And I thought, ‘she’s a girl, I like that.’.”
Dave was visibly moved as he explained the heartwarming moment that Sir Paul taught his daughter how to play some chords on the piano, as he said: “She’d never taken a lesson to play any instrument at that point. And she sat down and she watched his hands. They sat together and he was showing her what to play and they wrote a song together.
“As they were doing it, it was the only time I’ve ever taken a picture of Paul. Because to me, I don’t really want to do that, I just want to be his friend. But I saw my daughter getting her first piano lesson from Paul McCartney and I took a video.
“The next morning I woke up and I went to the kitchen. I was making breakfast and I heard her playing the song that they had written the night before. I came around the corner and she looked at me as she was playing the piano.”
Dave was in disbelief as he joked this was the end of his daughter’s piano playing days. He said: “She realised I was watching and she never played the piano again.
“And then she’s like I want to be drummer. I’m like, ‘Are you out of your mind?'” In another appearance on the Howard Stern show, Dave explained how he was once at Sir Paul’s house with another artist to grace the stage at Anfield, Taylor Swift.
He said: “Paul played a song on the piano and it was a new song. Everyone’s hanging out. He finishes. Everyone says that’s f*****g awesome woo.
“Then Stella and Mary, his daughters, are like, ‘Dave, go ahead, it’s your turn. Play that’. I’m like, ‘I don’t play piano. I don’t know what to do’. so then there’s guitars in the room and they’re all left handed.
“Taylor’s like, ‘I’ll do the song.’ She gets up on the piano and she starts playing this thing. I kind of smoked a little pot a little bit, which rarely happens. I was like, ‘What’s this song. I feel like I know this song?’
“She was doing [Foo Fighters hit] Best of You on piano. I’m just stoned to the bone man. I was like, ‘oh my God, what do I do’, , so I had to sit next to her. Of course she’s singing it beautifully and they’re like, ‘Sing with her Dave’. I’m like yah yah yah, so f*****g weird.”
