Met Eireann has issued a flood advisory and weather warnings for several counties across Ireland due to intense rainfall brought by Storm Claudia. Up to 60mm of rain is expected to fall in a 24-hour period, with Dublin, Carlow, Louth, Kildare, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, and Tipperary being particularly vulnerable. An orange rain alert is in effect for Dublin, Wicklow, and Wexford, while other counties are under yellow warnings for rain and wind.

Up to 60mm of rain is set to fall over a 24-hour period between Friday and Saturday with Met Eireann warning there is a ‘high’ possibility of flooding in several counties. Weather bosses said Dublin, Carlow, Louth, Kildare, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Kerry and Tipperary were particularly vulnerable due to ‘intense and persistent rainfall.

‘ In a rarely seen ‘flood advisory’ which is issued to local authorties and not released publicly, Met Eireann said between 30-50mm would fall in Leinster and Munster but warned upland and mountainous could see up to 60mm. The document was shared on social media by Irish weather expert, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather. The document reads: ‘Given the already elevated soil moisture and high river baseflows, even moderate additional rainfall may exacerbate existing flooding and prolong elevated river levels. ‘Close monitoring of river gauges and local conditions is strongly advised, especially in areas where ground saturation and drainage capacity are limited.’ The deluge is being blamed on Storm Claudia which was named by Spanish forecasters. The downpours are to be so bad, Met Eireann issued a rare orange rain alert for rain for Dublin, WIcklow and Wexford which will come into effect from 2pm today. The same three counties are also under a yellow wind warning. This alert is valid from 12pm on Friday through to 4am on Saturday. Meanwhile, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Louth and Meath are also under a yellow warning for rain. This weather alert is valid for 24 hours from 11am on Friday. Overview : Nearby high pressure will keep our weather more settled than of late with light rain or drizzle at times.
