Five trainee Gardaí have been suspended for allegedly handcuffing another trainee and leaving him under a running shower – in what has been described as ‘a prank that got out of hand’.
The Irish Mirror understands the incident is alleged to have occurred in the Garda Training College in Templemore, Co Tipperary within the past two weeks, sources say.
It’s alleged that the victim of the ‘prank’ only emerged from the shower after another trainee discovered him handcuffed in the shower and managed to uncuff him and let him out, sources say.
Sources say it is alleged the five trainees “were acting the boll*x” as they only received their handcuffs the day before.
The Irish Mirror also understands that prior to the alleged handcuffing and shower incident, the alleged injured party’s mattress was allegedly placed on top of a wardrobe.
“It was a prank, but then things got out of hand,” sources say.
Another source says the five suspended trainees are “at real risk of being dismissed” – “but this depends on if the alleged injured party wishes to progress matters”.
“Trainees handcuffing other trainee colleagues as a prank was ‘a thing’ back in the day as a prank but it’s different times nowadays,” a source continued.
In a statement to the Irish Mirror on Friday evening, An Garda Síochána said: “An Garda Siochana does not comment on ongoing internal enquiries.”
There are a total of 350 trainees currently in the Garda College in Templemore, with 160 of those in the phase of the five allegedly suspended and 190 trainees in the senior phase.
