FG launches nationwide campaign on security awareness, disaster preparedness

The Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), has kicked off a two-week nationwide enlightenment campaign aimed at promoting security awareness, disaster preparedness, civic values, and national identity across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja on Wednesday, NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, described the initiative as a coordinated national awakening to address gaps in public awareness, harmful practices, and misinformation that threaten Nigeria’s unity, safety, and development.

“This is not just another campaign; it touches the very heart of our identity, safety, values, and development. Our democracy thrives only when citizens are informed and actively engaged, our communities are safer when citizens are alert and cooperative, and our heritage endures when we uphold our symbols and identity”, Issa-Onilu said.

According to him, the campaign, which will be implemented across all 774 local government areas, focuses on five key areas, which include National Enlightenment on Government Policies, flood mitigation and disaster preparedness, national security awareness, and encouraging vigilance.

Others are the national values reorientation for students and the Nigerian identity and national symbols project.

Issa-Onilu explained that the campaign will feature press briefings in all states, grassroots outreach in markets, schools, motor parks, religious centres, and community halls, as well as the distribution of information materials in English and major Nigerian languages.

He said daily radio, TV, and social media engagements will also run throughout the two-week exercise, with toll-free lines and online channels open for citizen feedback.

The DG called on the media, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, student bodies, and community stakeholders to actively participate.

“Let us use these two weeks to ignite a new spirit of patriotism, vigilance, unity, and responsibility that will carry us into a safer, stronger, and more united Nigeria,” the NOA boss urged.

The campaign comes as Nigeria faces increased flood risks in 27 states, persistent security challenges, and concerns over youth behaviour and declining civic pride.
