The Federal Government has commenced the final interview stage of the National Health Fellows Programme (NHF) 2.0, with nationwide interviews set to begin on Monday, January 12, 2026, as part of efforts to groom a new generation of grassroots health leaders.

The programme, coordinated by the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) Coordination Office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, attracted over 150,000 applications from across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, following an open and competitive public call.

Designed as a flagship health-sector reform initiative, the National Health Fellows Programme will select one Fellow from each LGA to learn, observe and actively participate in strengthening Nigeria’s health system through innovation, accountability and community-driven interventions.

Officials said the selection process has been transparent, inclusive and strictly merit-based, beginning with digital screening tools and multiple layers of shortlisting. The final stage will involve in-person interviews conducted in candidates’ respective states.

Each state interview panel comprises representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO), State Ministries of Health, State Primary Health Care Development Agencies, academia, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), traditional institutions, and the SWAp Desk Office.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the exercise as a critical nation-building effort.

“This process reflects our commitment to fairness, transparency and excellence.

We commend the extraordinary interest shown by young Nigerians and look forward to empowering outstanding candidates from each LGA to drive health system transformation,” Pate said.

Also speaking, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, said the programme represents a new model for talent discovery in the health sector.

“It is encouraging to see young Nigerians answering the call to serve. The integrity of this process will ensure that only the most committed emerge to lead change from the grassroots,” he stated.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kachollom S. Daju, mni, added that the programme is institutionalising transparency and excellence in public sector recruitment.

“The Fellows selected will not only support service delivery but will also embody the values and future of Nigeria’s health system,” she said.

Successful candidates will undergo a residential national training programme in Abuja before being deployed to their LGAs to support health reforms and community-based interventions.
