FDA recalls shredded cheese: Before you sprinkle cheese on your pizza or add it to a casserole, check your shredded cheese. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a recall of more than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheeses produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. due to the possible presence of metal fragments.
The affected cheeses are sold under many store-brand labels at major retailers including ALDI, Target, Walmart, Publix, and Sprouts, among others, as per a report. Products were distributed in 31 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, as reported by Southernliving.
The cheese recall began in October but was upgraded to a Class II recall on December 1 because consuming these products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the FDA. While serious or permanent side effects are unlikely, metal fragments can cause dental damage, cuts to the mouth or throat, or even lacerations or perforation of the intestine.
The recall includes a wide range of shredded cheeses, including low-moisture part-skim mozzarella, Italian-style blends, pizza-style blends, and mozzarella & provolone blends. Products are sold in various cuts and package sizes. Some of the affected brands and labels include:
