Fat Joe’s Legal Team Issues Statement After Lawyer Tyrone Blackburn Arrested For Felony Assault

NEW YORK, June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Joseph “Fat Joe” Cartagena’s legal team issued a statement after lawyer Tyrone Blackburn was arrested by authorities for assault in the second degree, a felony charge, when he hit a process server with his vehicle.

Back in April 2025, Cartagena’s lawyer Joe Tacopina filed a lawsuit against Blackburn and Dixon – his former hype man – for extortion, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. As the process server arrived to present the paperwork to Blackburn, the lawyer struck the server with his vehicle.

While Blackburn was ultimately served, the arrest comes as Blackburn’s history of corrupt legal practices and unethical conduct has surfaced to the forefront.

“Tyrone Blackburn’s arrest comes as no surprise to me – it’s just the latest example of his malicious and manipulative pattern of misconduct finally coming to light,” Tacopina said. “Blackburn is an embarrassment to the legal profession and it’s a disgrace watching him use the court system to shield his extortion tactics. This is exactly why Mr. Cartagena proactively sued Blackburn and his client Terrance Dixon in April because he knew they intended to try to destroy his reputation by peddling salacious lies. Today’s arrest is just the first step, but I’m confident that my client’s name will be cleared from all of these falsehoods and Blackburn will be brought to justice once and for all.”

Cartagena’s lawsuit in April 2025 explained how Blackburn and Dixon sent a written demand letter to him on March 23, 2025, seeking money for being a “ghostwriter and uncredited vocalist” on some of Cartagena’s songs as part of their extortion scheme.

According to the lawsuit, as Cartagena disregarded the fraudulent demands, Blackburn and Dixon collectively escalated their extortion plan. On April 21, 2025, they sent a follow-up demand letter to Cartagena threatening to file a lawsuit against him for “not just for unpaid wages and other compensation, but also — and with utter disregard for truth or decency — false and outrageous allegations against Cartagena that have absolutely nothing to do with Dixon’s purported unpaid wages, including unspeakable acts such as statutory rape, forced labor, sex trafficking, and fraud.”

When a warrant was issued for Blackburn’s arrest on Thursday, the lawyer and Dixon followed through on their alleged extortion plan and filed a retaliatory lawsuit against Cartagena that was riddled with fabrications to harm his reputation.

New York State judges have also become aware of Blackburn’s unethical legal tactics. In April 2024, Judge Denise Cote of the Southern District of New York referred Blackburn to the grievance committee for the state’s federal court district in an order, outlining that he “improperly files cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly.”

In March 2025, Judge J. Paul Oetken also admonished Blackburn for his misconduct, issuing an order that said “Blackburn’s filings are replete with inaccurate statements of law” and “full of similar irrelevant insults, misstatements, and exaggerations.”
