Fake Complaints or Real Concerns? Unpacking the social media buzz around Yango

In Pakistan’s fast-evolving urban mobility landscape, ride-hailing apps like Yango, InDrive, and Bykea have redefined how people move through chaotic cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. For many, these apps introduced a level of safety, convenience, and dignity that traditional transport simply couldn’t provide. Real-time tracking, fare transparency, and driver ratings were once luxuries — now they’re expected.

But with new systems comes new scrutiny. Lately, my feed on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook became replete with emotional posts and personal accounts alleging misconduct involving Yango drivers. Once I clicked on the post, the next one immediately appeared on my feed. While a few of these posts received an unusually high reach, what intrigued me wasn’t just the content — it was the speed at which these posts kept popping up.

These include claims of fare manipulation, reckless driving, and even behavior issues. While a few of these posts received thousands of shares, what intrigued me wasn’t just the content — it was the speed and scale at which these stories spread.

As a journalist who closely follows and monitors digital behavior, I’ve seen how quickly unverified claims can morph into perceived truth. I wondered: were these serious red flags or social media smoke signals? Could it be, competition getting their hands dirty.. What’s fact, what’s fear, and what’s just noise?

Beyond the #hashtags: what’s real and what’s viral?

It’s important not to jump to conclusions in the face of viral outrage. Algorithms on social media are designed to prioritize engagement, not accuracy. Emotional stories — especially those involving safety or misconduct — travel faster and farther than corrections or context ever will. Some users have even learned to exploit this, knowing that a dramatic post, whether completely accurate or not, can get views, sympathy, and shares, as well as misuse it for discounts and promo’s.

To test this, I selected a few of the more viral posts about Yango and attempted to reach out to their authors. Surprisingly, most never responded. In other cases, people failed to provide details or evidence when asked to elaborate. One user who had tweeted about an “overcharging scam” quickly deleted their post after I followed up with questions.

This of course doesn’t mean that all concerns are baseless or that Yango is perfect, but it does show how easily public perception can be shaped by stories that haven’t been verified, and how quickly silence follows when verification is requested.

Yango’s Side of the Story — and My Own

I decided the sanest thing to do here would be to reach out to Yango. I wanted to understand how they process complaints, and once I got in touch with them, they walked me through their internal systems, instead of serving me with a platter of vague PR statements.

They didn’t dodge my questions or offer vague reassurances. Instead, they opened up their internal processes, shared complaint statistics, and walked me through their protocols. According to them, only 0.1% of rides in the last six months led to a complaint — all of which were resolved, with an average resolution time of just 2.5 minutes.

The company displayed a welcoming level of transparency in the way they process complaints, even showed me data on how each query was resolved, and how they approached accountability. Importantly, I was personally impressed that they did not share personal user data, but demonstrated how each case was reviewed meticulously.

I recognize that this data comes from the company itself — and therefore deserves scrutiny. But coupled with the lack of responses I received from users making viral claims, it raises valid questions: Are we looking at widespread misconduct? Or isolated incidents amplified by the viral nature of digital platforms?

When it comes to serious allegations such as behavioural misconduct, Yango explained that any such case is immediately escalated to a specialized team. Drivers’ access to receiving rides is temporarily restricted to carry out the due investigation and permanently banned if found guilty. The company claims that it works closely with law enforcement in such cases. While this process may sound like a corporate safety net, it is more than what conventional transport ever offered — where grievances often went unheard and unrecorded.

Yango is not without flaws. Like any service, it operates in a real world with real people — and real risks. But what sets it apart is the effort to document, respond, and improve in a structured way.

The Social Media Paradox: Outrage Without Context

On compiling a list of all posts that caught my eye on social media, I shared it with Yango. After thorough research on those particular cases, Yango says more than 97% of viral negative posts either lacked evidence or were taken down after the company initiated contact as per its case resolution SOPs. That’s not to say every story was fake, but it does raise a vital point: social media can amplify isolated cases beyond proportion.

The emotional nature of such content, combined with how easily it gets shared, can distort public perception. It’s a new-age challenge where companies are forced to respond to perception more than reality.

A Safety Ecosystem, Not Just a Service

Beyond complaint protocols, Yango has over 25 in-app safety features, including in-ride insurance for passengers as well as drivers, verified driver profiles, SOS emergency button, route sharing, route and speed monitoring, trusted contacts, chat support amongst others.

These aren’t just features; they’re functional tools that are used daily with a team accountable for it.

The app also includes empathetic features for across the network like “My Dreams,” allowing passengers to learn about their drivers’ goals, fostering a deeper connection and offering a chance to contribute to the dreams they are working towards such as buying a home, holy pilgrimage, quality education for their children etc. Similarly, there are also programs like “YangoCares,” which offers incentives and safety gear to top drivers.

Moreover, Yango is also keeping its commitments towards safety, by working closely with the local law enforcement agencies in Pakistan. Recently they partnered with institutions like the Punjab Safe City Authority, integrating official safety infrastructure with its platform, a first in Pakistan’s ride-hailing space. The company said the public can expect more such partnerships in the future as safety for passengers and drivers is of the utmost priority to them.

A Final Word – accountability with integrity

Social media has done what it does best — raise the alarm. But that should be the beginning of a conversation, not the conclusion. After digging into the viral complaints, talking to users, and verifying Yango’s claims through both interviews and my own testing of the app, I found that while Yango may not be perfect, but is actively evolving, deeply responsive, and incredibly committed to user safety. I learned that despite what people say, Yango really does go out of its way to ensure that users have a first-rate ride experience.

The real challenge now lies with all of us: users, platforms, and journalists. We must report the hard truths, ask the uncomfortable questions, and hold companies accountable — but also make space for verified facts, system-level analysis, and stories that go beyond the viral outrage.

Because in the end, integrity matters more than impressions.
