When it comes to bread, many households are on the lookout for a handy storage hack as the product can go off so quickly, leaving families with half a loaf of green bread just a few days after purchasing.
Just like bananas, which can turn brown in a matter of days, bread has a relatively short shelf-life lasting just three to seven days at room temperature, before it starts to mould.
While many people choose to freeze their bread, many households opt against this as it can both impact the texture of the bread and can be time consuming to thaw out, The Express reports.
Thankfully, popular YouTuber Frakking Creations shared a handy storage hack, which doesn’t use a freezer, that can be used to not only just keep bread fresh, but also “tasting great” for up to 15 days.
The video starts off with the expert saying: “Don’t you hate when your bread moulds too fast and you have to waste it by throwing it out? That used to happen to us too until we found a better way to keep it fresher and mould-free for longer.”
To avoid this happening in the home they advise there “are only two things to do” – cut holes in the bag and put the bread in the fridge.
Prior to placing the bread in the fridge, people are advised to cut some holes into the bag so that the moisture doesn’t remain inside, and in turn condensate causing the mould to grow faster.
With scissors, make small cuts around the top of the bag where the material gathers before it’s sealed, then add a few holes to the back and underneath the loaf too, adding fewer holes first, then adjusting based on how cold your fridge is.
The YouTuber explained: “When you make small cuts into the bag, the bread will slowly dry out, so you can adjust how many holes you cut to prevent the bread from drying out too much, not enough to mould and by doing this, the bread lasts longer than what you would normally expect.”
Some bread experts claim this method of storing bread could cause the bread to become stale, therefore decreasing its shelf life.
The results of the hack were then shown: “So we just took this bread out of the fridge, we put the holes throughout the bag. And what you want to do when you first do this, is after a few hours, or overnight, take a look to see if there is condensation building up inside.
“In this case, you can see a little bit – it’s not too bad. If you see more condensation than this or bigger drops of water, adjust how many holes are in the bag.”
