[OSEN=Yeon Hwi-seon, Yoo Su-yeon, reporters] It was belatedly revealed that film director Shin Sung-hoon passed away last May. He was 40 years old.
According to an OSEN investigation on the 26th, Shin passed away last May. A source from the entertainment industry said in relation to this, “I received the news in late May,” and added, “The funeral was held with the body processed as a person with no next of kin.”
Earlier, according to a report by Ilgan Sports on the same day, police were dispatched after a report from an acquaintance at the time, and no separate suicide note was found at the scene. It was reported that he had no prior illnesses.
A source told OSEN, “During his lifetime, the deceased frequently posted photos on SNS with captions like ‘Mom’ and ‘Family,’ but they were not his actual family. He tended to refer to adults around him as ‘Mom’ and followed them.” This elicited regret.
The regret surrounding Shin Sung-hoon’s death is also connected to his SNS activities during his lifetime. It was reported that he had written “D-day Today… Beautiful Day” in his profile.
Last year, Director Shin also shocked many by distributing press releases hinting at extreme choices. At the time, he said, “The wounds I received from people are too deep. The work of film production is overwhelming,” and even shared his struggles with considering emigration. The fact that he ended his life in tragedy after repeated signals of pain leaves an even greater sense of regret.
Shin, who debuted as a singer in 2002 and continued his activities in the entertainment industry, made a name for himself by winning the Best Director and Best Picture Awards at the 7th Hollywood Bluebird Film Festival with his 2022 directorial work ‘Thank You for the Jjamjajjang’. The film won dozens of awards at various film festivals, and his subsequent works, including ‘Minors’ released last year and ‘God’s Choice’ presented this year, achieved success at prestigious international film festivals, garnering attention as a director.
In particular, the deceased had been striving to continue active work in films and OTT platforms until recently, but Director Shin passed away without completing ‘Minors 2’, which has become his final work. According to the production company, the film is currently in post-production and is scheduled to be released in the second half of this year, honoring his intentions.
