the coinbase commercial felt like it was going to fix the vibe deficit caused by the dunkin ad for a sec and then it caused it to deteriorate further —
It’s been a big Super Bowl 60 for the hottest band of 1997. The Backstreet Boys were featured in two different ads in the first half of Sunday night’s slog between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. In between sacked quarterbacks and field goals we got to see Nick, Howie, AJ, Brian and Kevin further debase a legacy that, well, honestly, was at least moderately debased to begin with.
First it was signing about phone service. Then, a simple concept followed. The lyrics to “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” flashed across the screen like a 1990s karaoke scroll. For about 30 seconds that was it. Then, the stinger; in the midst of a Bitcoin crash, it was an ad for Coinbase. A Super Bowl dominated by ads for artificial intelligence got its throwback to the heady days of 2021.
People were not amused. The fact it followed a reviled Dunkin’ Donuts de-aging commercial didn’t help.
So, there you have it. People still love the Backstreet Boys. Just not in the service of crypto.
