Victor Wembanyama dominates French matchup opposite Rudy Gobert but the San Antonio Spurs fall to the Minnesota Timberwolves

An impressive make by Anthony Edwards with 16.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter lifted the Minnesota Timberwolves over the San Antonio Spurs, 104-103, in Target Center.
“He’s so tall. He takes away everything. He takes away the layup and the jump shot. He’s got good feet. He can move. He’s one of a kind. I felt like he thought I was gonna take a jump shot, for sure. And he would block that shit. I had to drive,” said the 24-year-old guard in a postgame media session, describing dribbling past Victor Wembanyama to hit the go-ahead bucket.
Making his way to 29 points behind 8/18 field goals, seven rebounds, three steals, and one assist in just under 27 minutes as the starting center for head coach Mitch Johnson, the French superstar was not enough for a win in Minneapolis. His side retained the lead until late in the fourth quarter, after peaking at a distance of 19 points, but was forced to 27-12, with the Wolves upping their tally to 26-14 in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.
In a demanding matchup versus Wemby, fellow French starting center of Sunday’s game, Rudy Gobert went for two points, 14 rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal in nearly 29 minutes. The 33-year-old big also reached the limit of a one-game suspension after a flagrant foul on the 22-year-old prodigy.
“Just overcoming adversity, staying together. No matter who was on the floor, I felt like we competed in every possession, especially on the defensive end. And when you do that, and do that relentlessly, eventually you’re going to have opportunities to get back in the game. And that’s what happened,” Gobert recapped the comeback win.
Another European starter for the team coached by assistant Micah Nori due to an illness for head coach Chris Finch, Italian Donte DiVincenzo produced 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and one block.
In contrast, French Joan Beringer of the Wolves and Polish Jeremy Sochan of the Spurs did not play.
