Police in Edinburgh have been deployed as residents watched officers prepare to combat any potential Bonfire Night disorder.
A resident in Bingham sent Edinburgh Live images of at least three police vans parked on Bingham Broadway – a short distance away from Niddrie where incidents have been seen in recent years. Officers were seen preparing at around 5.30pm on November 5.
This comes after police in Edinburgh were given the power to stop and search people and vehicles ‘where appropriate’. The powers came in from 3pm on Wednesday, November 5.
Police will be implementing Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, which also allows for the removal of any items believed to be used to ‘conceal their identity’. The changes will be in place in Niddrie, Muirhouse, Pilton, Moredun, Gracemount, Saughton, Sighthill, and Longstone.

Niddrie, which neighbours Bingham, has endured repeated attacks in past years. In 2022, youths threw petrol bombs at police and Police Scotland received 483 calls as trouble flared.
David Baird, who has recently moved back to Niddrie, believes the police should be giving residents more advice on the lead up to the holiday.

He told Edinburgh Live: “What the police should have done (last year) is tell local residents to take their milk bottles off the doorstep. That’s what they were picking up and throwing at the police.
“It’s kids that don’t even belong in this area, it’s people you wouldn’t normally see. They’re living off the reputation of Niddrie in the 1950s, when it was so rough taxis wouldn’t even come in here.”
