Economic Survey report on Bihar has punctured Nitish’s 20-yr development claims: RJD

Patna, Jan 31 (UNI) The Economic Survey 2025-26, tabled ahead of the union Budget 2026-27, has highlighted significant challenges for Bihar’s economy, sparking political debate regarding the state’s financial health, debt burden, and development strategy.

Following this revelation, the main opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) launched a scathing attack on the Nitish government.

RJD’s chief spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav strongly criticised the Bihar government’s policies and the state’s deteriorating economic condition, stating that the latest Economic Survey data has punctured the Nitish government’s claims of so-called development over the last 20 years.

He said that Bihar has emerged as the poorest state in the country in terms of per capita annual income.

“Among 34 states and union Territories, Bihar stands at the bottom, with the average annual income per person reported to be less than Rs70,000. Bihar’s per capita daily income is only between Rs150 and Rs190, the lowest in the entire country.”

He demanded that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar explain what kind of development he has delivered in 20 years.

“Today, Bihar ranks at the bottom in education and healthcare, while it tops the list in migration. Data from the e-Shram portal shows that nearly 2.9 crore people from Bihar are compelled to migrate to other states to work as daily wage labourers,” he said.

Expressing concern over the state’s financial condition, the RJD state spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan said that every child born in Bihar today is effectively born with a debt of Rs25,000 to Rs30,000.

“The treasury’s condition is so dire that Bihar’s Finance Minister has written to the Government of India seeking permission to take loans exceeding Rs1 lakh crore. When RJD demanded special category status for Bihar, these very ruling leaders maintained silence,” he said.

He added, “This truth cannot be denied that if Bihar is so backward today and burdened with such heavy debt, the NDA, which has been governing Bihar for the past 20 years, is solely responsible.”
