EAC installs 220,000 smart meters as €35m funding secured

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has installed over 220,000 smart meters since launching its rollout in January 2025, placing it ahead of schedule and securing €35 million in Recovery Fund financing that was at risk due to earlier delays.

Since launching the rollout in January 2025, EAC has installed over 220,000 smart meters, putting it on track to exceed the timeline target of 250,000 installations by June 2026.

The EAC may even complete its 400,000-meter goal within 2026 — a year earlier than the 2027 deadline, according to data gathered by Phileleftheros.

At the current pace, EAC is considering installing more than 400,000 meters to reach approximately 80% consumer coverage, the newspaper has learnt.

The rollout began with a pilot programme between 20 and 25 January 2025 in selected areas including Trypiotis in Nicosia, parts of Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios in Limassol, Finikoudes in Larnaca, and Kato Paphos.

Throughout January 2026, installations are taking place across urban areas in all districts, including Strovolos in Nicosia, central Limassol along Archbishop Leontios Avenue, coastal areas from Larnaca to Oroklini, Paralimni and Protaras in Famagusta, and areas along Tombs of the Kings Avenue in Paphos.

The authority announces new installation areas monthly via press releases, warning residents of power cuts lasting up to 20 minutes during installation.

The project’s total cost is approximately €50 million, with €35 million from the Recovery and Resilience Fund and the remainder covered by EAC reserves. CYTA’s contract covers meter supply only, with EAC handling installation costs.

The revised timeline secured the Recovery Fund financing after earlier delays threatened the €35 million allocation.
