Gardaí have seized an e-scooter from a brazen motorist zooming along a footpath at 45km/hr.
Officers in Naas, Kildare were on patrol on Thursday night when they spotted an e-scooter being driven down the footpath at 45km/hr, well above the legal limit.
On top of this, Gardaí found the vehicle was also without a rear light. The e-scooter was seized and the owner was fined.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Our members in Naas were conducting their patrols last night (Thursday) when they detected this e-scooter travelling at a speed of 45km/hr on a footpath.
“Scooters are also required by law to have a rear light, which this one does not. The scooter was seized and the owner fined.”
E-scooters have been legal on Irish roads since May 20, 2024. You do not need a licence to ride one and your e-scooter does not have to be registered, taxed or insured.
However, the scooter must be for one person only, have no seat, have a maximum continuous power of 400W, a maximum weight of 25kg (including batteries), and a maximum design speed of 20km/h.
Any e-scooter that goes over these parameters – more powerful and heavier e-scooters – remains illegal under the new regulations which came into force last summer. Users who exceed the maximum speed limit will risk a fixed charge notice of €50.
