WA Police crackdown on impaired drivers sees more than 30 motorists fined in just two weekendsClaire SadlerThe West AustralianSat, 1 November 2025 3:02PMCommentsComments

More than 30 motorists were caught over the alcohol limit, speeding, using a mobile phone or not having a seatbelt during a two weekend WA police crackdown on impaired drivers.

Road police officers increased their presence in areas that experience an increase in patrons over weekends, which often is associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption.

Police locked down parts of Burswood and Victoria Park on Saturday, October 18, leading to several infringements for drivers.

Nine motorists were over the alcohol limit, six were speeding, four used their mobile phone, and four also had no authority to drive.

The following weekend, on October 26, police conducted targeted patrols near licensed premises south of the river including in Gosnells, Thornlie and Canning Vale.

Eight motorists were over the drinking limit, one was speeding, one was caught using a mobile phone, and one wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

WA Road Policing commander Mike Peters said the targeted patrols were part of the police’s intensifying efforts to stop impaired drivers.

“We make no apology for enforcing the law and similar operations will continue in the lead-up to Christmas because the safety of our community, and our commitment to it, is non-negotiable,” he said.

“Our presence on the roads is constant and deliberate. It’s a clear warning to those who choose to endanger others that we can be anywhere, any time.

“Driving while impaired is a conscious choice to put lives at risk and if you make that choice, understand this: you will be caught and you will be held accountable.”

Police Minister Reece Whitby said most crashes came down to choices within a driver’s control.

“Every time you choose to drink and drive, you gamble with other people’s lives,” he said.

“Police say most crashes come down to choices within our control and we’re urging drivers to avoid the fatal five — drink or drug driving, inattention, speeding, failing to wear seatbelts and fatigue.

“We have more officers patrolling WA roads than ever before and those breaking the rules will be hit with the full force of the law.”
