US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the BBC over the editing of his speech before the infamous 2021 Capitol riots for a Panorama documentary.
Trump is seeking damages of at least $5bn after filing the lawsuit on Monday. He had teased the lawsuit earlier in the day, claiming the BBC “put terrible words in my mouth” when editing his speech prior to the notorious Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.
His claim centres on the editing of his speech for a Panorama documentary which aired in 2024, a week before he was elected to the US Presidency for the second time.
The BBC was accused of doctoring his speech by splicing together three quotes from separate parts of the speech, creating what appeared to be a single statement where Trump encouraged supporters to march alongside him and “fight like hell”.
The edit had omitted a statement in which Trump called for supporters to protest peacefully. The BBC has previously apologised to the Republican leader regarding the edit.
