Trump previously revealed ‘loopholes’ that would apparently allow him to run for a third term
Donald Trump has updated the world on whether he plans to run for president again despite America’s 22nd Amendment preventing him from doing so.
It’s currently not possible for Trump to run for president again at the next election, as the 22nd Amendment prohibits someone from running for more than two terms in office.
However, the Republican president has been teasing the idea ever since he stepped back into the White House in January, citing ‘loopholes’ that could see him be the Republican Party’s ticket in 2028.
US Representative Andy Ogles has even suggested a change to the law that would see it read: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Speaking with CNBC on Tuesday (August 6), Trump was asked directly if he plans on another presidential bid, to which he responded: “No, probably not, probably not. I’d like to … I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
The president added: “You know why. Because people love the tariffs, and they love the trade deals, and they love that countries – they love that foreign countries aren’t ripping us off. For years, they ripped us. A friend, and foe and a friend. And the friends were worse.”
Trump has done countless interviews over the years suggesting he could well run in 2028, as he previously told MSNBC: “I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.
“There are many people selling the 2028 hat, but this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to having four great years, and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.
“A great Republican to carry it forward. But I think we’re going to have four years, and four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular.”
With Trump suggesting he will not attempt to run, the president was asked by CNBC who he would see as his ideal successor.
Vice President JD Vance was immediately mentioned – someone Trump seemed to back.
“In all fairness, he’s the vice president,” Trump said. “And he would be probably favoured at this point.”
