Is Benedict Cumberbatch getting hands-on for Doctor Strange 3? A rumor breaks down some interesting information about the long-awaited sequel.
Doctor Strange has always been at the epicenter of the MCU’s current woes. The first film was derided as generic grey-brown hero slop terrified to stray from the franchise’s template. The sequel was a messy, eclectic collection of cameos exemplifying all of the Multiverse Saga’s excesses. That all to say, Doctor Strange 3 seems to be the last chance Benedict Cumberbatch has to leave a positive impact on the franchise.
And it seems that development on the sequel is slowly starting to take shape. A rumor from Nexus Point News suggests that Doctor Strange 3 is now in development for the MCU. With it, Benedict Cumberbatch is taking a much more involved role behind-the-scenes, not too different than Tom Holland’s recent influence on the upcoming Spider-Man film.
According to the rumor, one of the biggest ways Benedict Cumberbatch is putting his thumb on the scale for Doctor Strange 3 is when it comes to the director. The actor apparently wants Sam Mendes to helm the sequel. However, given Mendes is set to be filming The Beatles biopics for a year straight, it’s not likely he’ll be available anytime soon.
With this, the report also suggests that neither Sam Raimi nor Michael Waldron will return for Doctor Strange 3. Given the controversial nature of the sequel, it makes sense that Benedict Cumberbatch and the powers that be in the MCU would want to find a new team for the third installment. Hopefully, for everyone’s sake, the third time will be the charm.
