Development leap as council maps out future

THE Kadavu Provincial Council is reshaping its development approach to align with the Government’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2025-2029 and global Sustainable Development Goals.

Council chair Isikeli Vuniwaqa told The Fiji Times yesterday that the two-day meeting is focused on helping the yasana structure its own strategic development goals around national priorities.

“We’re now developing our strategic development plan to align closely with the national development plan and global SDG (sustainable development goals) priorities,” Mr Vuniwaqa said.

“While the purpose of our provincial meetings remains unchanged, which is development, we are now taking a more holistic approach. We are giving all council members the opportunity to share their concerns and contribute ideas for our future.”

He said many of the issues raised during the opening day reflected challenges shared across other provinces.

“Some of the concerns raised stemmed from a lack of understanding around government policies and also the guidelines that the Government follows.

“Other concerns that are coming up include the education forum and also the health sector. Kadavu, having some smaller islands around it, is facing difficulties in services, especially in education and health.

“Another concern that was raised is the longevity of infrastructure developments in Kadavu, especially the length of time that it takes for the government to build a road.”

Mr Vuniwaqa said the concerns were valid and reflected lived realities, but the community also acknowledged the challenges faced by the Government.

“These are real concerns from the people, but they also understand that there are factors that are in play, like the weather and bureaucratic processes.”

He said the council hoped the two-day event would give voice to those concerns and offer pathways for resolution.
