The Social Adaptation Support Centers (SUDEM), part of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Department of Health Affairs and the Department of Addiction Control and Rehabilitation, provide protective, preventive, and rehabilitative healthcare services to both individuals and families in the fight against addiction. Since 2021, 72 Istanbul residents have been served in this capacity.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues to provide important services at the local government level to address the rising problem of substance use and addiction in Istanbul and to protect public health. In this context, a total of nine Social Adaptation Support Centers (SUDEMs) have been opened since 2020 in Bağcılar, Sultanbeyli, Esenyurt, Sultangazi, Ataşehir, Arnavutköy, Beyoğlu, Sancaktepe, and Tuzla.
With the opening of new SUDEMs by 2029, it is aimed to provide service in 15 districts and reach a wider audience.
In SUDEMs, services are provided not only to addicted individuals but also to their families. The centers provide comprehensive services such as information, guidance, individual counseling, psychological support, group work, occupational therapy, family counseling, sports rehabilitation and psychoeducation.
Additionally, education and information activities are provided to citizens who are not addicted but want to learn about the subject and prevent addiction.
These services aim to reduce the city’s addiction problem, improve public health, and reintegrate addicted individuals into society by supporting them with a multidisciplinary approach.
Since the first SUDEM center opened in 2021, it has served 72 Istanbul residents. 32 people have benefited from awareness training organized as part of protective and preventive efforts.
Information and Consultancy Addicted individuals and their families are informed about appropriate healthcare institutions and their treatment processes are closely monitored.
Individual Consulting We help clients understand the causes of addiction. We provide personalized support using scientific methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing.
Group Therapy By bringing together individuals with similar experiences, social support is created. This reduces feelings of loneliness and fosters empathy and solidarity.
Ergotherapy (Occupational Therapy) By improving daily living skills, self-confidence and functionality are increased, and individuals are aimed to reintegrate into society.
Family Studies Efforts are underway to strengthen communication and support within the family. Family members are being made aware of the addiction process.
Sports Rehabilitation Regular physical activity helps reduce stress and support brain function. Exercise contributes to the healing process in the fight against addiction.
