DAYS CREEK — Days Creek Charter School invited students kindergarten through 12th grade back to school Monday.
The school held a back to school bash Thursday afternoon for students to get their lockers, meet the teachers and learn about additional opportunities besides academics.
Superintendent Joe LaFountaine said the school began Monday with an assembly and then the students went into their regular schedule. In each class, they reviewed the student handbook, a section per period, and when done reviewing the section the teacher would introduce the class with the time leftover.
“The first day of school was pretty good,” senior Emily Deignan said. “We kind of just went over the handbook, which is good, because the handbook is very different from my last school.”
Emily moved from La Pine with her father in time to begin her senior year. Days Creek Charter School has multiple buildings, which she said was odd so she kept getting the buildings confused, but she liked how the classes are condensed.
“I miss my friends a lot, like, I miss having people that I know I can hang out with,” Emily said of her first day at Days Creek.
After graduating, her goal is to become a veterinarian and she plans to start that journey by attending Lane Community College.
Trenton Ladd, meanwhile, said he was not as excited for the first day of his senior year.
“It’s because I have very little core classes so I’m here just for electives,” Trenton said. “And it’s such a small school, there’s not very many electives.”
He is excited to play three sports — cross country, basketball and track — and to take a college class to gain extra credits.
Other Douglas County schools to begin school Monday included Glendale and Yoncalla school districts. Most other schools, including Roseburg Public Schools, will begin Tuesday due to the Labor Day holiday.
