Darwin Nunez’s dream start to life with Al-Hilal continues – and he’s making sure everyone knows it. The Uruguayan forward left Liverpool in the summer in a £46.2m move to Saudi Arabia.
Nunez, 26, opened his goalscoring account over the weekend as he found the net in a 2-2 draw with Al-Qadsiah. The striker then added yet another goal as Al-Hilal got their Asian Champions League Elite campaign underway in midweek vs Al-Duhail.
Having started among the substitutes, Nunez was introduced at the break with his side 1-0 down to their Qatari opponents. And it did not take him long to fire home from Hamad Al-Yami’s pass to level matters.
French international Theo Hernandez scored 10 minutes later to turn the game around in Al-Hilal’s favour. Nunez immediately took to social media to share his delight over his latest strike and also send a reminder to Liverpool fans of the quality he does possess.
He shared a number of images of him celebrating alongside the caption: “Vamos,” with a blue heart.
Barcelona star and Nunez’s Uruguay team-mate Ronald Araujo was among those to react as he replied with a muscle and fire emoji.
Nunez will no doubt be aiming to extend his positive recent form in Al-Hilal’s next outing. They next take on Al-Ahli on Friday evening – a game that will see him come up against former Premier League stars Ryiad Mahrez, Ivan Toney and Edouard Mendy.
Nunez’s move to Saudi came after a three-year spell with Liverpool in which he netted 40 goals in 143 appearances in all competitions. And he penned an emotional statement once his exit from Anfield was confirmed.
“Thank you, Liverpool,” the forward posted on social media. “Three years on, it’s time to say goodbye. I’ll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever.
“I leave with a full heart, thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back – through the highs and through the lows.
“Liverpool will always be part of who I am. I’ll miss you more than words can say. To all the staff and my teammates – thank you and all the very best for the future.”
Mohamed Salah was among those to have given Nunez a glowing farewell message, while the Liverpool star also spoke out to defend the striker after it was claimed that the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle represented an ‘upgrade’.
