Good morning, it’s Friday, November 14th, 2025, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County!

Learned a lot yesterday about ocean racing. I recorded a podcast about the Annapolis to Bermuda race in June, so stay tuned so you can learn more too! Also speaking with the Mayor Elect in a few hours, so there’s that as well! Today’s OMG fact is for men looking to get married. The average size of an American diamond engagement ring is .8 carats — don’t let her or any jeweler tell you otherwise! Anyhow, we have a bunch of news. So shall we?

Anne Arundel County police are investigating a commercial robbery at Level Up Games in Glen Burnie after an employee was assaulted late Wednesday night. Officers were called to the store in the 7600 block of Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard around 11 p.m. on November 12, 2025. Investigators say a man believed to be in his 20s came into the business, began assaulting an employee, and displayed what the victim believed was a firearm. The suspect took an unknown amount of cash and merchandise before fleeing. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 410-222-4731, or leave an anonymous tip on the Anne Arundel County Police tip line at 410-222-4700.

Downtown Annapolis is gearing up for a packed holiday shopping weekend built around Small Business Saturday on November 29, when more than 200 local businesses — about 95 retailers and 75 restaurants — will roll out the welcome mat along Main Street, Maryland Avenue, State Circle, West Street, and City Dock. Organizers are urging shoppers to support the independent shops and eateries that give the city its character and tend to give back more to the community than big national chains. The fun continues on November 30 with Artist Sunday, a national push to buy holiday gifts created by local artists, musicians, writers, and performers, plus the always-popular Chocolate Binge Festival and the Grand Illumination of the downtown Christmas tree. December keeps things going with Midnight Madness shopping nights on the 4th, 11th, and 18th, the Hanging of the Greens on December 6, and the Santa Speedo Run and Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade on December 13, along with holiday shows at Rams Head On Stage, Maryland Hall, and Classic Theatre of Maryland. To make it all easier, the city is offering free parking at the Calvert Street Garage after 6 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, two free hours at meters and kiosks with the ParkMobile app from November 27 through January 1, one free hour at the Hillman Garage on Gorman Street, and a $4 flat rate after 4 p.m. at the Whitmore Garage — so the biggest challenge may be choosing where to shop, not where to park.

Zachary’s Jewelers is marking a meaningful milestone downtown this year, celebrating 20 years since a devastating fire destroyed its original store and the community rallied to help reopen within a week. To honor that support and keep a beloved tradition alive, the jeweler will once again team up with the Chesapeake Ballet Company to present The Nutcracker during Annapolis’ Grand Illumination celebration on Sunday, November 30, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The afternoon begins inside the Zachary’s Jewelers shop with a reading of The Nutcracker story, complete with hot chocolate and cookies, and the first 100 children will receive a free keepsake nutcracker to take home. At 4:30 p.m., the event moves outside as dancers from the Chesapeake Ballet Company perform scenes from The Nutcracker under the holiday lights on Market Space, and families are invited to stay, meet the performers, and take photos. Registration is free and available through Zachary’s Jewelers’ website.
